End of Jam

Hi everyone!

Last post during game jam period. First of all, I enjoyed a lot participate in this jam, I learned a lot about developing an isometric game on Godot, that has been a fantastic engine. The new version makes so much easier to make your game, although there are some issues with it: a crash on the program once, the need to restart so some files can update, and the major problem was the web export templates missing. I would love to provide a web build, but unfortunately it is a part of the engine that still need an update.

About the final touches on the game. I used the main scene as the base for creating a new level, so now it has two levels. And I also created a simple menu screen where the player can hit play and choose a level to play. The end result is a game where the player must spend life to reach the buildings, after reaching one, the monster regain some life and win some points. After destroying the whole city, a lot more points are given to the player and a new city spawns. The game ends when the monster's life reaches zero.

It is a quite simple game and is not what I was expecting to make, but I'm pretty happy with the results. I managed to create pixel art for an isometric game and will definitely draw more stuff after the jam. I developed a movement system based on an isometric grid, that is something that later I found that its simple to do, but it was nice to discover by myself how to make it. By far the most complicated part was the UI elements, it's easy to show what you want, but hard to show how you want.

One thing about the art. As the coding was getting to much of my time, a friend of mine offered help with the animations for the player. I accepted and told I would put him on the project team, but he insisted that he was just helping, so I leave here my thanks to him. He used some references to create that slime with the amazing engolfing the building animation. To keep the rythm of the game I needed to cancel the animation when the player moves, but if it stands still it can see that beatiful slime devouring the building.

Last but not least, about the game jam. As I said I enjoyed a lot working on this project, already had some experience programing and working with game engines, but except for one jam in 2019, I never participated in another, so having to develop so much in a limited period of time was indeed challenging and a nice experience to learn. I'm not about how I should have written these Devlogs, but I tried to pass the idea of what was learning and doing in a simple way so it wouldn't have so much boring technical stuff. Anyway, another detail about those logs is that english is not my first language so I'm sorry for any issues with spelling, grammar or just the way I of writing some stuff, it's is the only one I know.

Thanks once more for giving some attention to read this and for been able to participate in this jam! o/
